 Favorite book: Out of the Crisis (originally published in 1982) by W. Edwards Deming. He's known for bringing quality control into modern manufacturing and the book speaks to that, but in a more general sense. It focuses on how you treat people. One of the main points is driving out fear. As a former mountain climber, that resonated. Until you drive out fear, your mind can't focus on making clear, good decisions.

《酒神》(Bacchae) :「不要誤以為你的機智就是智慧。」「對愚人而言,智慧有如痴言妄語。」

Deming 博士(1900-1993)是老式的學者,他的著作,不管是統計學的或管理學的書,在各章章前都有"題辭"(epigraphs)。這些,給讀者復習或深思的題材。不過,這對喜好追根究柢的人兩大挑戰:
一. 讀者確切知道該章"題辭"(epigraph)所對應的章旨嗎?
二. "題辭"(epigraph) 的上下文是什麼呢?
多年前,我要找下述"題辭",卻找不到;Euripides著《戴神的女信徒》(The Bacchae),胡耀恆,胡宗文譯---根據希臘文文翻譯,而Deming 博士則根據英譯本,不過我沒去查英譯本的出處:

Deming博士的"題辭"引文,無法在這版本找到。無法知道版本差異。

If there is a shining period in W. Edwards Deming’s career it would be the years he spent working with the leaders of Japanese industry during the 1950s. The meteoric rise of Japan as an industrial and economic powerhouse after WWII, and the honors bestowed upon him by Japanese society are testament to the power of his transformative theories and teachings.
Transforming Japanese Industry With Honor And Respect
1950Receives invitation to teach the application of statistics to quality improvement from the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE).
Dr. Eizaburo Nishibori, a member of JUSE, and Professor Sigeiti Moriguti of Tokyo University invite Deming to lecture on statistical methods for business in a session sponsored by the Keidanren, the most prestigious society of Japanese executives, under the leadership of its chairman, Ichiro Ishikawa (also president of JUSE).
1950Conducts first of a dozen lectures beginning at Tokyo University. 在日本巡迴講學十幾場,第一場在東京大學。

生物界的同步現象中,當屬螢火蟲成名最早。1915~1935年間,「科學(Science)」期刊中,共有21篇論文以此為主題。究竟是巧合、是環境因素,或是蟲群中有一「領導者」,眾「蟲」唯牠是從?直到1960年代,有系統的說法漸趨成熟:每一螢火蟲都有自己內在的頻率、自己的週期與循環;同時,每一隻螢火蟲也都會根據夥伴的頻率做調整。但對於雄蟲同步發光的意義,求偶、競爭、合作等可能性,眾說紛紜。這個話題紅極一時,甚至曾遭到美國眾議院議員批評:「花納稅人的錢研究螢火蟲發光,簡直浪費公帑!」誰知,後來這看似無用的研究卻神奇地有了應用之處——路由器(routers)的同步,使資訊傳播遇到了阻礙;由螢火蟲身上習得的知識,恰恰可提供啟示。科學、數學上,「無用之用」往往毫不留情的「打臉」短視近利的人們。
